Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller Review: The 8‑Zone Yard Boss in 2025 Score

9.4

Excellent

What's great about the Rachio 3 (and what's not)

Who it’s for

Look, if you want a sprinkler controller you can basically install and forget about—one that actually waters smarter and saves you some cash—the Rachio 3 is it. The 8-zone model is the go-to for most homes. Setup is a breeze, the app is fantastic, and the automatic weather skips? They just work. Honestly, if a friend asked me to recommend just one controller that nails the basics in 2025, this is the one I'd tell them to buy.

What we really liked

Believe it or not, the 'Weather Intelligence Plus' feature is the real deal. It uses super local weather forecasts to automatically skip watering if it's about to rain, get too windy, or freeze. It's just smart. The app is clean, fast, and easy to understand. You can tell it what kind of plants, soil, and sun each zone gets, and it actually uses that info to water better. And here's the thing: you don't need a subscription for any of the core smart features. Plus, it's EPA WaterSense certified, so you can probably get a rebate from your local water company. We tested it with Alexa and Google Assistant, and it worked without a hitch. If this were my yard, I’d install it and not think about it again, except maybe to admire my lower water bill.

Just a few things to know before you buy. The Rachio 3 needs Wi-Fi for all the smart stuff, like weather skips and using the app remotely. Your basic schedule will still run if the internet goes down, though, which is good. There aren't many buttons on the device itself—you really run everything from the app, so keep your phone handy. It only connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and if you're building a big smart home, know that there's no support for Matter right now. The main unit is for indoors only; you'll need to buy their weatherproof box if you're installing it outside. None of these are dealbreakers for most people, but they're definitely worth knowing about upfront.
