It honestly feels like a little bit of magic when you get it dialed in. Here's the thing, though: compatibility is key. Your specific door and cylinder have to be the right type. You might also find yourself wanting the separate Nuki Bridge for total remote control through their app. But for the right door, it's a fantastic blend of everyday convenience and really solid privacy.

Getting this thing installed is surprisingly easy. The Nuki just mounts right on the inside of your door and physically turns the key that's already there. No drilling needed, and you're probably done in about 15 minutes. But—and this is important—two things have to be right for it to work. First, your lock needs an 'emergency function,' which just means the outside key still works even when a key is in on the inside. Second, the cylinder ideally needs to stick out a tiny bit for the mount to grab onto. If yours doesn't, Nuki sells a replacement that solves it. Once it's on, the Auto Unlock is the star of the show. You just walk up, and it opens. It's pretty reliable as long as you give the app location access and tweak your phone's battery settings so it doesn't shut the app down. Its use of Matter is solid, too. Add it to your smart home hub, and you get all the controls and automations you'd expect, right inside the Apple or Google Home app.

They've really thought through the security and privacy. Believe it or not, you can run the whole thing locally through Matter without ever touching a Nuki cloud account, and all the commands are end-to-end encrypted. The app even gives you a detailed log of who's coming and going—great for dog walkers. As for battery, it's decent with the optional Power Pack, but just know that heavy use will mean charging it every few months. And yes, it makes a little whirring noise, but there’s a Night Mode to keep things quiet. Two final thoughts from me: for the best remote control using Nuki's own app, you'll still want the Nuki Bridge. And remember, this is really built for the Euro-style doors common in Europe and the UK, not your typical North American deadbolt.
