Sony 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD TV X90L Review: Still a Smart Buy in 2026? Score

9.3

Excellent

A few things to know

What's great about it

Look, the Sony X90L just gets the important stuff right. The things you notice every single day. For a TV that isn't a Mini-LED, the contrast is seriously punchy, and the color looks natural right out of the box. And when it comes to motion for sports or action movies, Sony is still the one to beat. The Google TV interface is a breeze—it's smooth and has all the apps you'd want. Gamers get everything they need: 4K/120Hz, VRR, the works. And here's the thing for PS5 owners, it has special features like Auto HDR Tone Mapping that make setup a total non-issue. If you've been searching around for this model, this is that balanced, no-drama TV a lot of people are actually looking for.

A few things to know

Some things to keep in mind

It’s not a Mini-LED TV, so you're going to see a little bit of 'blooming,' or a halo effect, around bright things on a dark screen. The viewing angles also aren't super wide, so if you have family sitting way off to the side, the picture might look a little washed out to them. You only get two of the super-fast HDMI 2.1 ports. That means if you use one for a soundbar, you've only got one left for your new game console. And while the brightness is good, some competitors from Hisense and TCL get even brighter. The built-in sound is fine for dialogue, but you'll want a soundbar for any real cinematic punch.

So who is this for? You should absolutely get it if you value Sony's fantastic color and motion, and you want that simple Google TV experience for a room where most people are watching straight-on. But you might want to skip it if your room is really bright or wide, or if you're a movie buff who needs those perfect, inky OLED blacks. For that, you'd be better off with a bright Mini-LED or an OLED. My take? If this were for my main living room, with a PS5 and a couch right in front of it, I'd grab the X90L on sale and pair it with a decent soundbar. It's a fantastic, reliable choice.
